What happened
Blizzard posted two more roles on the game in October: a voice-over designer on 1 October and a senior materials artist on 7 October. Both are in Irvine, and both mention Unreal Engine. [A] [B] Neither Blizzard nor anyone on the team has named an engine for the game.
The wording
The senior materials artist must have solved pipeline problems “using a modern AAA game engine such as Unreal Engine”. The job is materials “for natural environments, architecture, characters, and props”. [A]
The voice-over designer’s listing puts “familiarity with narrative scripting tools, content management systems, or Unreal Engine” among the extras. [B]
Both open with the line from the stage: “We are here to make StarCraft, and it’s about damn time.” [A]
What it does not establish
“Such as” and “extra points” are a recruiter’s wording, not a technology announcement. A team can ask for Unreal experience for reasons that have nothing to do with the engine it ships on. It is still worth noting for a studio best known for building its games on its own technology.
Since then, a third listing has asked for it too. The World Systems listing names “Experience working with Unreal Engine” among its extra points. The engine stays in the open questions of our sourced overview, now with something behind it beyond a guess.
